LABOR & INDUSTRIES BUILDING

Location: Olympia, Washington
1992
38,260 m2

This new state office building is situated on a heavily wooded 35-acre site just south of Olympia, Washington. Consistent with the natural surroundings, it was also designed as a breakthrough "healthy" building meeting Washington's new air quality and environmental safety standards. The design joins a 410,000 sf five story office building and a smaller dining/conference pavilion with a grand rotunda which serves as the main entrance to the complex. This cone-shaped glass rotunda - reminiscent of an evergreen tree and framing a view of Mount Rainier - provides a warm welcome to visitors. The employee work and shared spaces are equally welcoming, functional - and healthy.
